Hi All,

Here's another selection from my scanned slide collection this time from the 1992 airshow.

This has to be one of the all time classic shows due to the number of eastern bloc aircraft present many not seen in the west before or since!

As usual I start with some arrival shots from outside the airfield.

Turkish AF F16.



Still showing signs of it's Aeroflot colours the TU204 arrives.

MiG31 Foxhound lands after it's validation unfortuantely it did not fly during the show proper.

Aahh for the days when the show stuff actually stayed for the public to see at the weekend. I remember the Mil Mi26 dropping the 'Red Devils' over Queen's Parade fields some time after the air show was over. I remember the TU22 setting off all the car alarms as it roared down the runway! Wasn't that also the year when there was an SR71 Blackbird. I seem to remember seeing one depart from a show round about then and also setting off all the car alarms!!

Think the Mil 26 went tech and stayed for quite a while after the show, cant remember how it got home though, the crew could often be seen in Farnborough shopping centre and became almost celebrities, they were unmissable in their russian hat, flying jackets and boots

I lived as close as you could get on the Farnborough Queens Hotel side at the time of the 1992 show and it was a great feast particularly of Russian aircraft. I have mentioned the YAK-38 validating late and there were reports of it melting the landing surface when attempting a vertical take off/landing, but I think the reports were actually of the YAK-141? I am sure they both validated late on the sat morning before the show itself started. Earlier in the week the YAK-141 was to be seen being emptied out of An-124 with a Russian support ground vehicle (it was not permitted for them to use the support vehicle). I went on one of the trade days when the 141 flew, very straight and not too dramatic and no vertical landing or take off. I don't think it flew every day. I believe it was the same pilot who was flying the YAK-38.
Some other things that spring to mind about the 1992 show and the Russians? I am sure whilst watching a very busy period of arrivals at Eelmoor, a SU-25 Frogfot was wanting to land but couldn't as an AN-124 was lined up on the old 25 awaiting clearance and another 124 was on finals - reckon the TU-22M had just arrived at that same time. The Frogfoot's pilot was in a bit of a panic as he was saying he had no fuel - he landed safely in the end. Also I am sure that as well as the Mi26 that Lord Evan Elpus mentions, the SU-24 and one of the SU-27's stayed long after the show had ended? Does anyone know why? They were parked in front of C Shed with Farnborough based aircraft well after the show had ended?

Had the `Privilege` of Access All Area`s (AAA) during SBAC 1992, Hanger A used by DRA inmates, also was MiG-23 702/20+48

& SU-22M 629/98+10, also was a Mi-24 Ex Afghan AF No Marks My Question was this/is this the 24 which was at Boscombe Down

earlier in the year ?

Over at the Eastern Dump Area was MIG-17 Nose Marked 2684 & (Egyptian) MiG-21 Fuselage ? No Marks Sand Camo

Anything on the MIG-21 ??

Hi Tarnish - Your Mil 24 was actually ex Libyan though I still don't have a serial for it I'm afraid. It was captured by the Chad Army in the Libya/Chad war of 1987 and originally shipped to France. It went from France to Boscombe in a crate and some sources have it flying from West Freugh during late 1988 before going on to Farnborough. Where it went from there I have no idea. Reportedly the Chad Army also captured 3 Libyan Mil 25s including serial 302 - reports have it that all 3 Mi25s were shipped to France and then one onward to the UK and the other to the USA so it could be that the one we got from France was a 25 and not a 24 - little difference with the 25 being the export version but Libya had 24s as well.

Your Mig 17 2684 was actually a Mig 19, the Mig 21 with it was an unknown ex Egyptian two seat Mig 21UM and the fuselage of an Su7 (alas also unknown)was also there on the Eastern dump. The Western dump area had the nose sections of ex Egyptian Mig 21UM 0446 & SU7 7907.

Hope this helps and may jog someone's memory who knows the full story.

A bit more digging shows that the cockpit section of SU7 7907 was rescued from the dump (albeit somewhat burnt)and is now preserved near Kendal in Cumbria. Only problem is that Egyptian serial 7907 was a two seat and the cockpit section is from a single seat SU7. This would suggest that "7907" which is stencilled on the aircraft is actually the c/n of the aircraft and not its serial?
