I was at the USS Alabama Memorial Park in Mobile a couple of weeks ago where YF17 72-1570 is now preserved. The curator is anxious to obtain any photos of the aircraft at the 1976 SBAC show and, in particular, any that show the information boards that were placed with the aircraft in the static. If anyone has anything that they think might be of help I can either put them in touch with the curator or forward these myself. Clearly any help from members would be appreciated. Thanks Dave

The YF17 which displayed at Farnborough suffered a catastrophic engine failure just after departure in the vicinity of Basingstoke and crashed near Middle Wallop, the failure of one engine took out the other. As far as I can recall, only one YF17 ever appeared at Farnborough, so it's unlikely to be the one you mention.

Chevvron,
I sought to correct your misapprehension on this subject in a reply to you on the SBAC 1980 thread on this board:
"The YF-17 was at the 1976 show, and as far as I know went home unscathed! The F-18 pictured above is the 2nd F/A-18B BuNo 160784, which came to grief on 8/9/80 as mentioned.
An expensive show for McDonnell Douglas, as the F-15 lost an engine to a birdstrike during its display on the Sunday, I seem to remember."
The '76 Northrop YF-17 was indeed 72-01570 (painted with an extra '0' as seemed fashionable in those days, and NAVY titles).
Hope this helps, regards, Keith.
