Hi,
Excellent, a year I went. I lost most of my logs from this era, over time, so really nice to look back.
Cheers
Ian

From the era when the airshow exhibits stayed long enough for the general public to enjoy watching them put through their paces!

The 'F18' is actually the prototype YF17. On departure back to the USA, it suffered catastrophic engine failure to one engine near Basingstoke causing damage to the other engine such that it began to lose height. The pilot ejected near Andover and the aircraft crashed just west of Middle Wallop.

Chevvron,
The YF-17 was at the 1976 show, and as far as I know went home unscathed! The F-18 pictured above is the 2nd F/A-18B BuNo 160784, which came to grief on 8/9/80 as mentioned.
An expensive show for McDonnell Douglas, as the F-15 lost an engine to a birdstrike during its display on the Sunday, I seem to remember.
Regards, Keith.
