Hi Thanks for the link Not quite an old timer but I have lived in Cove since 1962 but still a baby then. I was wondering if the choppers are on land in the area that was between the old aircraft dump and the land built on for the Concorde building. The reason I think this is it looks like in the background of the Wessex is the old observatory and what may be the the old radar tower being built both at the end of Kennels Lane. I used to be taken for walks along Kennels lane & Ellis Road in the 60s, and Kennels Lane used to end at a gate somewhere around the current Qinetiq car park. I don't know when the old radar tower was built but I remember being almost opposite the hill it was on at the end of Kennels Lane. I also liked the shot that had Cove aerials in the background now a housing estate. Sorry if more questions than answers but very interesting!!!!

hi , yes i remember the aerials in cove they were still in situ when I moved there in 1990, the reason I ask about tweseldown is the structure in the background of the wessex shot looks similar to the one still present on the racecourse today

Hi Again, I will ask my father, although he only worked at the RAE from 1961 he attended most SBAC shows in an official capacity as RAF ground support and took similar air side type photos he may know. I remember the shows of the late 60s & early 70s where the helicopters for the joint forces assault display would be hidden in what is now Southwood golf course. they would fly in low over Ellis road and cross at the 18 threshold now TAGs grass bank. So it's not impossible that some choppers were parked off field. I still think the small structure is the observatory ( I think that still exists ) and the left structure is the Radar tower under construction. Another hint is if you can zoom to the tail of the Wessex there's what looks like a chimney is this a chimney from the NGTE? Anyway I will quiz my father to see if he can remember Twesledown being used as I can picture the structures you are talking about. Cheers
