A small section of Fairoaks has been sold by RBS; this does not comprise part of the airfield so immediately some smartass reporter in the local 'News and Mail' has decided the houses are on the menu. I sincerely hope they're not. Just imagine, some NIMBY buys a house then complains about aircraft noise claiming they weren't told about the airport when they bought the house. And don't go saying that couldn't happen because it does! I was told years ago of a couple who paid out £1.25M one summer for a house near Fulham Football Club at Craven Cottage. Come the start of the football season they tried to start a campaign to get the stadium closed down due to the noise and disturbance! They honestly expect people to believe they hadn't noticed the grandstands and floodlights before they bought their house? The section of Fairoaks referred to by the way is on the north and west sides and comprises the 'cricket field' (large open area which used to be the undershoot of runway 16), GAMA hangar and most of the office and small industrial units, it does not include the control tower, fire station and main storage hangar. It has been bought by an American company which specialises in regenerating airports.
Hopefully they'll go ahead with the new hangar complex planned a couple of years ago as that's 'permitted development' ie doesn't need planning permission. Also mooted was a runway extension to about 1,000m.
