Hi, All Back in the late 60's I worked at the RAE in the Atmospheric Hazards Section of EP Dept. We used two facilities - the "Bird Gun" at Ball Hill, and the "Blower Tunnel", which was situated between Ively Gate and Ball Hill. Is it still possible to access this area, seeing as TAG Aviation have a control gate at Ively Gate? Tia Andy Wis

Hi Andy, Looking at Old Maps with Ball Hill and what is now Ively gate I would say transitting between the two nowadays would need to be done within the perimeter fence. I do believe the whole road layout around Ively gate has been changed since about 1990 though, I dont think todays Ively gate is in the same position as the one from the past.

Thanks, Jeff I went around the North side yesterday, but, naturally, couldn't get in via the (present day) Ively Gate. I didn't go any further west, to the Structures Gate. Is that Gate "passable"?

i am sure a lot of the Perimeter fence that way was renewed so as to bring certain areas of the perimeter road into Tag Airfield a visit to FAST May be helpful as they have loads of maps.

The reason lots of perimeter fencing was upgraded and moved was due to the CAA security requirements for a passenger airfield! Not sure where the structures gate is/was, was it near where the RAE Puma and Nimrod fuse were in the 90's ?

Hi Andy
Why don't you just write to TAG explaining your requests and see what sort of response you get. A polite letter may well come up trumps with perhaps a guided trip around in a security vehicle.
If it doesn't succeed you haven't really lost anything.
It would be nice to know the outcome if you do give it a try.
Good luck, Dave

Jeff: Not sure about the Puma and Nimrod fuselage positions. Structures Dept and Gate was Westwards further around from Ively Gate, on Ively road... Andy

Tia Andy Wis Both places are inside the Qinetiq site and hence nothing to do with TAG Farnborough Airport. There is a Qinetiq access point at Iveley Gate, just turn right at the mini roundabout (after the one with the replica E28/39) instead of going straight ahead for the airport, however, not having worked there for over 5 years, you might find it's not open all the time.

Andy Just follow the roadsigns to 'Cody Site', that will bring you to the gate which replaced 'Structures Gate'. I believe Cody's Tree is just inside.

It might prove very difficult getting in there. My son works in one of the units in the complex and he has to come to the gate to see me. Again I'll repeat what I said previously. They could well be interested once they hear your historic story. I will mention to my son not that he is in a position to do anything.
And sorry Andy, no to Henlow the nearest I've been to there was looking in as I have been past.

Morning,
Talking of TAG, I assume you are aware that TAG have conducted tours of their EGLF every Tuesday am which start at 1000 and last for about 3 hours?
I went on one yesterday and found it extremely interesting including visits to hangars, tower etc.and a drive in a coach the full length of the runway!
The only problem now is that they are fully booked until next January - I can let anyone have contact details but I think they are restricted to about 20 on each trip.

A nice bit of PR from TAG with the impending application for CAS. Oh I am too cynical!

Think they've been doing the tours since the new complex was built on the northern side
