Have heard disturbing reports that the museum at Lasham is being forced to vacate the airfield due to a substantial increase in rent demanded by the Gliding Club. Anyone know if there is any truth in this?

Lets hope not. What a shame that would be. Its not exactly prime space they are using either is it?

Quite a number of the airframes are in a shocking condition. All the effort to save the planes in the first place is wasted as they are rotting away.

Well the DH Drover must be the only one in Europe (the Northern Hemisphere??) and should be saved.

Rumour is that the AOP 9 has gone already, the Drover and Starfighter are soon to depart.

Courtesy of Dick Hawker posted on the eglf list today, posted here for info:
I was talking to the owner of the storage yard at Booker on Saturday. He confirmed that the Lasham Museum is closing this week. He is collecting the Sea Prince for storage at Booker. The Drover is going to Salisbury Hall for display at the Mosquito Museum, and one of the Meteors plus possibly the Starfighter are going to Poland.
No news on the other exhibits, but clearly the collection is being sold off.

I noted when passing this afternoon (sunday 22nd november) that the F-104 Starfighter was being moved from the SWAPS site. It was being towed by a tug down the taxyway to the west towards the glider hangars. Also at the site itself there was a low loader trailor parked by the museum building.

F-104 is rumoured to be off to Poland and possible re-build to flying status!

The F104 is currently in the ATC Lasham Car Park awaiting transportation to Bruntingthorpe.

The F104 was delivered in to Lasham on board an RAF Hercules, we believe sometime in the late eighties. Will try to get confirmation of the date. It was apparently complete apart from an engine and an ejector seat.

Date was 19 August 1988, when XV191 delivered the F-104

Starfighter 'live at Brunty!
I bet the Lightning would beat it easily, just like it did in service, but the Europeans went with what became known as the 'Widow-maker' unlike the EE Lightning which was only known for it consistent 'bingo' fuel status!

Allegedly all the airframes have been acquired by a 'dealer' and will slowly move off site into storage somewhere.

The Drover now rests on its belly with wings removed.

and finally... I drove past today, and alas all that remains is a set of passenger steps. SWWAPS is no more I'm afraid.
