I think its been mooted before. I heard a long time ago that they were thinking of moving the Chinooks to Lyneham to form a big helicopter base. In the local press even the North East Hampshire MP suggested it may have to go because the land is ideal for houses.
Well you could fool me. The road from Alton to Hook is a country road, the town of Odiham has virtually no shops just a few restaurants and public transport links are limited to one bus between Camberley and Basingstoke every hour and nothing on a Sunday.
Short sightedness in the extreme if you ask me. Odiham airfield is on a hill and unlike a lot of RAF airbases is very difficult to watch whats going on, so would be ideal for some of the more secret work. Its fairly close to London and extremely near the headquarters of the army. Why aren't they using it? Shut down Middle wallop.
It does annoy me!

hi one possible reason is the postion with regards house building close to M3 \RAIL etc house prices would be high and demand Great . FAB Approaches to 06 Are i believe often delayed cos of Odiham Traffic and weekend gliding should the limit be raised then more So Personly it would be a disaster for the area look at FAB No houses were said to be allowed near to the Airfield well how much closer is on the very perimter edge at government house road and Factory site . The prospect of a very large new town at odiham looms very large in the chancellers coffers and of course government policy is to build thousands of new houses per year in the south SOD The consequences

Think it will be a toss up between Benson and Odiham as to which is sold off, the remaining station being the RAF helicopter base.

In reply to Odiham having no shops-Tescos would be in there like a flash if they knew a couple of housing estates were being developed, plus the news of supermarket interest would make the houses sell like hot cakes! By the way, despite the term being used for some years now, I have yet to find out what the figure for affordable housing is? (Especially when it comes to low wage earners.) It probably means its really for those on at least £150K or am I being rather cynical!

Odiham is owned by a local farmer and leased to MOD, so no money will be raised from this rumoured base closure!

How does that work fx? Surely the farmer would say he wants the remaining terms of the lease paid up. Or if its like house leases, the MOD could just sell the lease to Barrat Homes and make a few quid?
