PLAN for a huge complex of 137 houses, 262 flats and office space in Farnborough was due to be given the green light at a meeting last night.
Rushmoor Council’s Development Control Committee was due to grant permission for the plans – provided developers agreed to their conditions.
This is despite the council receiving 19 objections to the proposal.
The site is at the north west corner of the Queen’s roundabout, where the Farnborough Road meets Government House Road.
If approved, the new development would see the site transformed from disused brownfield land into a total of 399 homes with office space overlooking Farnborough Airport.
The plan includes a part four-storey and part-five-storey curved “landmark” building – where most of the flats would be located.
The houses would be two and three-storey terraces, including 30 four-bedroom homes.
Three play areas for children would also be provided.
The office space would comprise two-storey business blocks arranged around the boundary of the Farnborough Airshow site. A total of 196 commercial car parking spaces would be provided.
Some residents in Maitland Road, the nearest residential area to the site, wrote in to object to the plans.
Though the development will not be linked to their homes, some Maitland Road residents will end up with a view from their back garden of row upon row of homes.
The residents requested that better fencing be installed to protect their privacy. They also thought the part four-storey and part-five-storey landmark building would be unsightly and out of character.
Residents in the surrounding area also raised objections. Pressure on infrastructure, especially roads, was a common concern.
Planning officers recommended that the development be granted as long as developers agreed to make 35 per cent of the homes affordable.
They also asked for a £380,000 contribution towards improvements to Southwood Woodland, and a £77,319 contribution in lieu of open space provision within the site.
They also asked that the developers maintained the three play areas “in perpetuity”.

A PLAN to build more than 150,000sq ft of office space at the former Farnborough Business Park was due to be approved by councillors at the same meeting.
The site, which is on former Ministry of Defence land, will be transformed from grassland and parking to four four-storey office buildings.
The whole area, which includes the award-winning building The Hub, has been rebranded “IQ Farnborough” so the new buildings will be dubbed Q110, Q130, Q140 and Q150.
In addition to the buildings, there will be a single storey café and a multi-storey car park.
No objections were received from members of the public, but the Environment Agency objected on the grounds that the site was at risk of flooding.
Planning officers recommended the plan be approved because they thought the proposal would benefit “both the business and residential communities” in Rushmoor and that the plans “support the ongoing development of IQ Farnborough”.
