I have an interesting small undated programme given to me in 1994? for an event that took place at Farnborough exclusively for RAE employees and familys. It was given to me by an employee of mine at the time who went with his dad who worked at the RAE to see the show [exact date unknown POSSIBLY midweek]. Participants of a flypast at 4pm in a "line of flight" in order included SE5A, Gladiator, Harvard, Spitfire, Chipmunk, Meteor, Canberra, Hunter, Lynx, BAC 1-11, Jaguar, Tornado, Hercules W2, Nimrod and Harrier. A parachute jump was sheduled for 4.30 by the DERA Parachute Free Fall Display Team. A static display comprised of Tornado GR1 [Night Fox], Hunter, Harrier T4, Jaguar, Tucano, Islander, Jetstream, Tornado F3, Andover, BAC1-11, Eurofighter Replica, Gazelle, Lynx and Puma. There was also an oppurtunity to view the Thrust SSC.

I can remember the Rasberry Ripple Jag flying low in a tight turn over Southwood around that time, also, from a fading memory there was a Varsity plodding around on the same day but that doesnt seem to be in the flypast so maybe I viewed a different event !

There was a DERA Open Day on 20-May-1998 during which there was a fly-past very similar to the list above except that the Chipmunk concerned (G-BDDD) was in bits so I flew the club's Cherokee (G-BBKX) in the fly-past instead. Could this be the event described ? The "ninety years of flight" would also tie in with Cody's first flight being in 1908 as well.

I have had a look in my 1994 diary and the only thing I can come up with is the end of the RAE / DRA at Farnborough and their subsequent move to Boscombe Down which happened in March 1994. I clipped articles about that occasion from local newspapers, one of which has a photo of a flypast featuring some of the aircraft you mention, there's a BAC111, Hunter, Hawk, Tornado, and Jaguar. The BAC111 was XX919, Hawk was XX327, Hunter was WV383 (now on display at the FAST museum). I don't know the Jaguar (possibly it was the one that's now at FAST with the Hunter, it was in the 'raspberry ripple' scheme) or the Tornado. Does this sound like your event?

The DERA fly-out to Boscombe Down was on 24-Mar-1994 and the aircraft involved were as above with the Jaguar being ZB615 and the Tornado was ZA449. Hawk XX342 also acted as photo-chase during the actual farewell flypast. As far as I remember there was no formal announcement, the word just got out through the grapevine and there were quite a few people on top of the SBAC terraces to watch the event. The Jaguar in FAST (XW566) had been retired for a few years by then and we were using it for EMC experiments (along with "Puma" XW241 and Harrier XW934 - both now also in the museum).
